Bone Density (DEXA)

bone-density-DEXA-scan-frederick-mdAlso known as Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA/DXA), are used to evaluate bone mineral, measure total body composition and fat content. DXA scans are typically used to diagnose and follow osteoporosis. X-ray beams are aimed at the patients’ bones and soft tissue absorption is subtracted. When study is complete, a detailed report is generated and available for the patient if requested. The DXA report is reviewed by our radiologist, and a typed report is generated within 24 hours.

How to prepare for a DEXA scan:

  • If pregnant the scan will not be done.
  • If a contrast study has been performed within 7 days prior (X-ray, CT, MRI).
  • Do not take calcium supplement 48 hours before study.
  • Do not take meds for osteoporosis or osteopenia the day of the exam.
